Safe Water Access Project: Empowering Mbalame Village with a Sustainable Borehole Solution

With funding from Japan Water Forum, in 2024, a transformative water project was implemented in Mbalame Village, Traditional Authority Masula, Lilongwe District, Malawi, benefiting 2,190 residents. The project addressed the community's critical need for clean water by constructing a durable borehole equipped with a hand pump, reducing reliance on unsafe water sources. Activities included geophysical surveys, borehole drilling and extensive community training on operation, maintenance, and hygiene practices to ensure sustainability. Community members and stakeholders contributed through labor, fundraising, expertise, and awareness campaigns. The project has significantly improved access to clean water, reduced waterborne diseases, and empowered the community through capacity building, fostering better health, education, and economic opportunities. Future plans include expanding the system with a solar-powered pump and communal water points for broader access.
